A further challenge of organic farming – which excludes the use of man-made chemicals – is the use of natural methods or those authorised by European regulations to protect plants from diseases and from the attacks of insects, and to fight against weeds. For this purpose, prevention techniques and certain measures – such as the choice of varieties, sowing techniques, extensive cultivation, careful soil preparation and the use of organic fertilisers – are of key importance.

A balanced agro-ecosystem helps nature safeguard itself and develops a self-regulating system. Insects can also be useful, such as ladybirds that feed on aphid larvae.
